Why is this calorimeter a need in the low energy deuteron experiment ?

Because it requires an absolute beam current measurement with less than 1.0% accuracy.
The problem is that the present absolute current calibration system is designed for currents
    greater than 50µA, and the experiment will involve a beam current around 1µA, so that
    the experiment needs a new calibration device.
In the calorimeter, the energy absorbed is a function of the average beam current, and is
    also given by the product between the increase of the temperature in the calorimeter and
    its specific heat (see the operating principes page for more).
