Minutes: SBS Meeting August 1, 2012 Attendees: Carlos Ayerbe Gayoso, Bogdan Wojtsekhowski, Robin Wines, John LeRose, Gordon Cates, Jason Sharpe, Gregg Franklin, John Annand, Seamus Riordan, Brian Quinn, Doug Higinbotham, Bob Michaels, Thia Keppel, Vina Punjabi, Mark Jones, Nilanga Liyanage 1) Gordon Cates gives a talk on Polarized 3He target plans. a) For slides see link b) Looking at cheaper options in light of the budget situation c) Explains the options: i) Review the “May 24th” version (full plan) (1) Present status (2) Ready to construct prototype, but waiting… ii) Use Protovec I style cell? (1) 2/3 the desired figure of merit (2) A1n improved by 200 not 300 iii) Gives list of options (4) (1) Cheapest, $200k, 1/3 luminosity (2) Most expensive, $0.5-1.0M, full luminosity (May 24th target) iv) Still many questions re performance v) Shows the Transversity target arranged in Al’s model vi) Magnetic Field considerations (1) Almost certainly can get something to work, but what are the compromises? (2) Barrel Magnet is better than Helmholtz coils d) Design information flow is improving. Hopefully, will help streamline the design effort. e) Bogdan asks: How do we proceed? i) Minimum option is #3 in the list (see slide 4) $375k ii) Produce a bulleted list of what to build and how much it will cost. 2) Bogdan Wojtsekhowski brings up a series of topics a) Collaboration meeting? Yes, late September (avoid conflict with Møller and PREX) b) Newsletter? There’s a lot of information in the minutes, but a quarterly summary would be nice. Vina will put together one for the last few months. c) Brian’s distance from target to magnet? Brian says he used 3 m target to yoke for GMn. d) HCAL costs? Gregg says: i) Making light guides via injection molding would be very inexpensive. ii) Attenuation in the scintillators used in the simulations was not right. iii) Is $330k sufficient? Concern is the scintillator cost. If they can make them at Dubna we’re probably OK. e) Coordinate detector plans? Mark is putting together a document that has the information needed to update the PMP. Hopes to have it together by August 15. -JJL
