Disk Cleaning and New Quotas 2011
This file: http://hallaweb.jlab.org/equipment/daq/workdisk_clean2011.html Bob Michaels, Feb 2011.
This pertains to CLEANUP of Hall A work disk planned for Feb 1, 2011.
For a full listing of all disk see this list of disks.
Periodically there will be a massive cleanup of /work/halla, for reasons explained below. The last cleanup was on Feb 1.
The cleanup job entails running scripts with root priviledge
to delete "oldest" and "biggest" files until about 4 TB or so are free. Next,
quotas may be reduced so that the newer experiments can be accomodated,
specifically we'll create /work/halla/e07006/disk1 (to be shared by several
experiments running in Spring 2011) and /work/halla/e08014/disk1.
Further details
- Always remember that work disk is SCRATCH DISK and is NOT BACKED UP. Keep important files in MSS or /u/home.
- Why ? There is a budget crunch in computer center and the outlook is bleak for purchasing substantially more disk in the coming months. Our servers are full, so it's time to clean up.
- Details of algorithm: A script is run to identify all files older than NDAYS and bigger than NBYTES. I'll initially try NDAYS=200 and NBYTES=200 MBytes. The files are filtered to avoid sources, libraries, and tar files. The list of candidate files for deletion is inspected visually to trap for problems, then the files in the list are deleted.
- You can help by deleting files yourself. Then I don't need to delete as much.
- Feel free to offer better solutions. Some answers to the usual comments I hear are here .
