General Analysis ideas: Feb 2007

posted by feuerbac on Thu 22 of Feb, 2007 [15:30 UTC]
After yesterday's meeting and talking with Bogdan, I assembled a list of small projects or things to look into, either for myself or the students. In no particular order, they are:

  • Find a way to simplify the ND analysis
  • Simple MC to model the BB detector response using Hydrogen data as the template, followed by
  • ... use momentum distributions of nucleons in Carbon-12, Helium-3, Nitrogen, and Silica to generate Ppar-q and Pperp distributions to be compared with our observed momentum distributions.
  • Research the mixed-event analysis technique and its applicability for exclusive reactions.
  • Look at e- vs. pi- and pi0 tracking 'efficiency', selecting events with the shower/preshower.
  • Effect of raster-size on the background/asymmetry in production runs.
  • Bogdan suggested using the event display to look for elastic proton-proton scattering events in the shielding of the ND, since it is 1/2 of the proton-proton total cross-section at 2 GeV/c.

I wish everyone a Happy New Year. After talking with everyone, either at or after the GEn analysis meeting Jan 10, a list of current tasks is below:

Aidandocumentation of beamline
familiarizing with ROOT and the analysis
AmeyaBB.scintillator calibration for Kin#3
dilution factors
analysis of kin#4
BrandonFinalizing Raster code (calibration and calculation for replay)
card-dependent t0 calculation, including technique improvements
fellowship applications
Jonveto efficeincy calculation
paper for U.Maryland
analysis of kin#4
Seamusfalse asymmetry measurements to get GEn for kin#4
cleanup of BB tracking code
Sergeyrun list
analysis of kin#4
shower calibration for kin#3
Timcontinue study of ND timing resolution as a function of time during kin#4

Some more analysis documents

So, a page about the usage and features of D.ctimeL1A has been added to the list of GEn pages. Primarily it tries to explain a number of the obvious bumps and wiggles in the D.bit3 and D.ctimeL1A distributions.

Also, a page about the Livetime calculations has been started, and more will be added as I figure out the most accurate and simplest ways to determine the DAQ and electronic livetimes for the experiment.

There will be a "howto do the GEn analysis" page started up sometime soon, that will link these different sections together. But for now, the stages in the analysis that have to be completed are:

  1. Calibrate a run period (BB optics, Neutron Detector, scintillators)
  2. "Replay" or process data from the run period
  3. Measure the raw neutron and proton asymmetries from the datafiles
  4. Remove (subtract) false asymmetries due to beam-charge asymmetry, DAQ and electronic livetime asymmetries
  5. Estimate and remove any "tracking efficiency" asymmetry
  6. Subtract the "dilution" of the proton's from the neutron sample, as well as backgrounds from the N2 (~ few percent) and windows (hopefully negligible)
  7. Now we have the real observed asymmetry?
  8. Using the target polarization get the physics asymmetry
  9. Account for the finite-acceptance to get the average Q2 and Aparallel, and then the ratio of GEn/GMn

I've uploaded a new page to describe the stages of the Neutron Detector Analysis; a copy can also be found under Articles (where it first appeared). razz

This will be my running thoughts while performing the analysis, as well as a list of the tasks I think Aidan, Ameya, Brandon, Jon, Seamus and Tim are currently working on. As I write new analysis-type documents, a link from here will be posted.

Current tasks:

AidanProceedings for Spin06 and HUGS
AmeyaScintillator timing for all kinematics, pulsed beam analysis
BrandonEditting Raster calibration report, database
JonVeto efficiency study and report
SeamusAsymmetry study(??)
TimND energy calibration and geometry
RobFalse asymmetries, Analysis documentation
