Run Coordinator's Report for September 14 Swing to September 15 Day
Summary
Production running throughout the night, despite some troubles with right
Q1. Beam was taken by accelerator all through the day shift (and the
swing), so the Hall went to controlled access for those shifts. Several
groups went in and worked on various subsystems. However, iochal6 could
not be repaired, so we cannot use the right arm tonight, and we will have
to fix it in the morning.
Significant News
- Production running and Compton data-taking last night. During
the owl shift the Compton background rates became high enough to trip off
the Compton HV consistently, however, so they didn't get much data in the
night..
- Q1 went down around 1:30am. After Q1 went down, MCC was unable to
deliver a full 100muA, so they delivered 94 muA. Jack came in at 4:00am
and reset Q1 in a short access to the hall, allowing data-taking on both
arms again until the beam was taken away at 7:00am. See halog
entry 289616.
- The hall was in controlled access all day, with several groups
getting work done there and in the MCC doing injector studies (halog
entry 289550, halog
entry 289771, and halog
entry 289790).
- At 11:00am, the counting house smelled like smoke, but nothing was
found to be causing it. Shift crews should be alert in case this
returns. On investigating for the source of the smoke, we moved some of
the false floor tiles and discovered a puddle of water and an electrical
conduit of wires with water dripping out of it. After talking to Ed and
Heidi, I called Dreamie Newsome, and she submitted a request for
facilities to check it out. They came, agreed that it was a problem, and
went to plan a solution. See halog
entry 289683.
- There was trouble with iocha16, so Javier and Heidi were working on
fixing it, but could not resolve the problem. We have no control at all
over any of the magnets of the right arm except for Q1, which they have
ramped down. Javier and Ed are going to get software on call to help fix
this in the morning. See halog
entry 289764. Because of this, we will only be running on the left
arm tonight.
- The Compton is still having issues, but we are now taking Compton
data, and the experts are working on analyzing and understanding these
data so that we have a better understanding of what is going on.
Plans
- The detailed run plan for the night is in halog
289776.
- We will run only on the left arm tonight, and will most likely have
an access tomorrow to fix iocha16.
- Establish good beam (do harps, spot++, check raster), then go to
production running on the left arm.
- Take lots of production data! Watch the lumi widths to see if
anything changes. Please check the histograms on the online data monitor
with the reference ones on the shift how-to page (http://hallaweb.jlab.org/experiment/HAPPEX/opmanual/opmanual.html#HPXStartingonlineanalysis).
- Run spot++ every couple of hours and log it. Change the prescale
factor PS8 to 1 and PS1 and 2 to 99999.
- Take Compton data, starting a new run every two hours. Call the
Compton experts if the background rates get so high that they trip off
the Compton detector HV.
- We are planning to have a Moller measurement at 2:00pm, if we are
not in access to fix iocha16.
- Beam Time Accounting: accept the beam unless the Compton people say
that they just cannot use it. Then record it as BNA.
Concerns
- If anyone must reset a magnet, they must make a halog entry
stating which magnet on which arm, and what was wrong with it to require
a reset. The word "tech" must appear in the subject line.
- Be sure that the prompt analysis is done for every run!
- The BTA program doesn't subtract any time to speak of for
beam trips. Please manually subtract a full minute for each beam trip in
the beam time accounting.
- Please write a detailed shift summary (including runs taken and any
activities) and submit the BTA for each shift.
- Please make sure that the shift checklist is done once each shift.
- If you have to page or call someone for support, please do so from a
counting house phone or it will be ignored!
- Keep a close eye on the lumi widths as we take data.
- Please continue to take runs even if there is no beam. These data
can be used to determine pedestals. Please label these runs as having no
beam.
- The dithering looks non-invertible. Someone should look at this.
- The Compton polarimeter (but they are taking data now).
- There are lots of empty shifts that need to be filled immediately!
Please sign up!
Concerns that have been addressed
- The spurious VDC alarms have been fixed by Javier.
- A WAC schedule has been created posted (https://hallaweb.jlab.org/wiki/index.php/WAC).
- Several people have been trained in how to reset the magnets.
- The Moller quad power supplies have been checked, and were found to
only be varying by a few milliamps.
Coulombs So Far
- Coulombs taken in this time period: 4.7 C
- Coulombs taken in all so far: 37.5 C as of 7:36am
