keyword=Beam Time Lost to Operator Error
It seems that the target move which supposedly took place last night
after 9pm didn't happen. We took several hours of data on the dummy
target when we should have been taking production. Unfortunately, this
was an error which should have been caught immediately.
The procedure on the wiki for moving the target clearly states "Watch the
motion on the video screen to your upper left". This was also covered in
the target training. Last night the target computer was in the process
of crashing, so although the move was requested by the operator in the
GUI, it didn't happen. If the operator had watched the screen, the lack
of movement would have been caught.
In addition, the 3rd operator should have seen that the rates were not
correct. The rates were dutifully written into the paper logbook, but
the rate for the supposed ammonia runs was actually lower than the rates
on the dummy target.
Fortunately, the next shift caught the problem and it was fixed quickly.
We appreciate all your efforts, and I know anyone can make errors like
these. But, please pay attention to what you're doing while on shift;
avoid errors and double check yourself. The experiment depends on your
vigilance.
