Swing Shift Summary for Sunday, October 16, 2005
The Shift Crew: Sarah K. Phillips, shift leader
Lisa Kaufman, target operator and shift worker
Special Guest Appearances by:
David Lhuillier, run coordinator
Ed Folts, T.O.C.
Jack Segal, reiforcements
Javier Gomez, disembodied voice on phone for dipole advice
Ameya Kolarkar, moral support/troublemaker
----------------------------------------------------------------
Highlights:
16:00 - 17:30: Left dipole misbehaving.
17:30 - 22:40: Quad scans
22:40 - 24:00: production running
The Run Plan:
1. Get the left dipole up so we can take some data.
2. Quadrupole scans to check out rates
3. Production running
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Run Down
16:00 - Shift starts with the right arm not running at all, and the left dipole also down. The left dipole won't cooperate, but we are working on it with hope.
16:10 - The left dipole still won't cooperate. After contacting Javier Gomez about it, he says that the NMR has to be restarted, which means that we need to have to request a controlled access. The problem is that none of us have any idea where the NMR for the left dipole is. So, we page Ed.
16:22 - We request the controlled access from MCC. Ed calls, we tell him our predicament, and he says that he will come in and restart it for us.
16:32 - Tim arrives from MCC to check the hall for the access.
16:44 - Ed arrives! Yay! Ed, David, and Lisa head down to the hall to restart the left dipole NMR, and the IOC is also rebooted to the sound of much beeping from the alarm handler. I am disappointed since I don't get to go down and find out where the NMR is located since I am the shift leader. Someone will have to show me this later...
16:52 - Javier calls and after I accidentally answer the phone with "Hello, Hall C counting house" to which he laughed at me immensely (It's a habit from all those Hall C shifts...), he says that before we start ramping up any magnets, make sure that the NMR can be put into auto, manual, etc. (to make sure it is responding). If it isn't, I'm supposed to tell Ed to check the address for it.
16:55 - Jack arrives and heads down into the hall to help with dipole situation. I am starting to feel left out up here!
17:16 - K.K. calls and tells me that when we do the quad scans, we should be looking at the widths. He says to take a production run at the quad setting (for something like 10 minutes), then analyze that while we do a scanner run, then check the widths.
17:19 - Everyone comes up out of the hall (Ed, Jack, David, and Lisa). The dipole and Q1 seem to be working, we just are waiting on Q2 and Q3 now.
17:29 - The magnets are all back! The hall is now in power permit and we have requested 58 muA.
17:39 - MCC calls; they are sending us 58 muA in a minute. Then we will start the scans.
18:19 - Changed beam current to 40 muA so that we could have fewer beam trips for the scanner runs, and because the ADCs were saturated in the last run anyway. Lisa adjusted the high voltages for 40 muA running. Then we started the scans again.
19:04 - We are changing the current for Q1 by +5% (now it is at 1969.2 A, from the original setting of 1875.444 A), and taking a HAPPEX run. Then we'll take a profile scan.
19:46 - The Q1 current is now changed by +10% (the new setting is 2062.9884 A). We are starting a HAPPEX run now. Once that run is finished, we will do a profile scan at these settings.
20:32 - The Q1 current is now changed by -5% (the new setting is 1781.6728 A). We are starting a HAPPEX run now.
20:50 - Back to the nominal current setting for Q1 (1875.444 A). Now we are changing the settings for Q2. The new current setting for Q2 will be +5% (1423.17 A, from the original setting of 1355.40 A)
21:07 - The Q2 current is now changed by -5% (the new setting is 1287.63 A). We are starting a HAPPEX run now. Once that run is finished, we will do a profile scan at these settings.
21:55 - Back to the nominal current setting for Q2 (1355.40 A). Now we are changing the settings for Q3. The new current setting for Q3 will be -5% (1389.527 A, from the original setting of 1462.66 A). We are starting a HAPPEX run now.
22:04 - The Q3 current is now changed by -10% (the new setting is 1316.394 A). We are starting a HAPPEX run now. Once that run is finished, we will do a profile scan at these settings.
22:40 - We are going back to the nominal quadrupole settings (1462.66 A for Q3) and the normal detector high voltages so that we can start production running at 58 muA.
22:46 - Back to production running at 58 muA!
23:48 - Compton is running now (started by David).
24:00 - Shift ends smoothly! Quad scans are finished and we are running in production mode now.
