The On-Board Ethernet interface allows a user to down-load code into the VCC's kernel from a remote station. The VCC 2117's Ethernet / Cheapernet interface is implemented with the chip set from AMD. It includes the AM 7990 Local Area Network Controller (LANCE), the AM 7992B Serial Interface Adapter (SIA) and the AM 7996 IEEE-802.3 / Ethernet / Cheapernet Transceiver. This chip set supports both Ethernet and Cheapernet configurations. Cheapernet is an implementation of Ethernet on inexpensive cables, having fewer nodes, supporting shorter distances, but providing the same 10 Mbits/s performance.
This interface provides a direct Cheapernet connection on the VCC 2117's front panel with a LEMO connector or an Ethernet connection with the A.U.I (Attachment Unit Interface) connector. The A.U.I connector allows connection to the external M.A.U (Media Attachment Unit).
Ethernet is used in the case of OS-9 systems where an embedded OS-9 kernel can be down-loaded from a VME workstation.
