   UPSMON is a basic UPS monitor developed for the APC
   SmartUPS devices. It is designed specifically for the APC
   SmartUPS interface and will only function with SmartUPS
   devices.  If you are using a UPS device other than an APC
   SmartUPS model, do not bother downloading this software.

   UPSMON provides the basics.  While it doesn't have a fancy
   X Window graphical interface, it does provide the following
   essential functionality that a UPS monitor for the APC
   SmartUPS devices ought to have:

   * Reliable background daemon process that monitors the
     the UPS device with minimal CPU overhead.

   * Take advantage of the SmartUPS interface.  While there
     are UPS monitors available that will support a 'dumb'
     RS-232 interface (pwrfaild for example), you bought a
     SmartUPS device.  Why not run software that takes
     advantage of the SmartUPS interface and gives you access
     to the device features that you paid for.     

   * Perform a graceful system shutdown when the power fails,
     with a configurable retry interval to control how long
     after the power failure to wait before initiating the
     system shutdown.  A graceful shutdown also means that
     when the power resumes, the system reboots clean without
     the need for any manual intervention.

   * Post useful messages to the system logs to provide an
     audit trail of UPS events including power failures,
     resume power events, battery low warnings, and system
     shutdown events.  
     
   * Easily configure serial device port assignment, log file
     usage, retry interval, etc.  All file name and path
     location dependencies are soft and configurable.

   * Easily start, stop and query the monitor daemon for UPS
     status information.  Status information includes line
     voltage, battery voltage, load, serial number, firmware
     revision, last battery replacement date, online/standby
     condition, and more.  The objective is to enable
     easy remote management of the UPS device.
