General Information ------------------- The TDS5000 software is a collection of software components that must be installed on a TDS5000 Series oscilloscope. When you purchase a new TDS5000 Series oscilloscope, the main Scope Application and Optional Application software (1M-extended memory, 2M-extended memory, 2A-advanced analysis, J1-Jitter and timing analysis, J2-disk drive measurements, JT3-jitter and timing analysis with Rj/Dj and BER estimation, DVD-optical storage analysis, PW2-power analysis and measurements, and USB-USB2.0 compliance test software only) are installed at the factory. Some software packages must be installed separately by the user, such as the GPIB Programmer Guide or the Performance Verification software. Refer to the booklet that accompanies each Product Software CD for descriptions and instructions to use their contents or contact your local Tektronix representative. The software is on two distinct CD-ROMs: TDS5000 Series Operating System Restore CD and TDS5000 Series Product Software CD. To update the instrument software to a newer version than was shipped with the oscilloscope, see the instructions included with the TDS5000 Series Product Software CD. The oscilloscope is supplied with the following paper documents in English, unless noted otherwise: User Manual Quick Reference (in ten languages) Graphical Packing List Oscilloscope Analysis and Connectivity Made Easy (User Manuals for Options J1, J2, JT3, DVD, PW2, USB application software packages, if you ordered them.) Optional Application Software Installation Manual TDSUSB2 Reference Card Activating Options ------------------ Some TDS5000 Options, such as extended memory, advanced analysis and application software, are factory installed. If you ordered these Options from the factory, they are already enabled and ready for you to use. If you want to purchase one of these Options, contact your local Tektronix representative. Once the purchase transaction is complete, you will be given a new Option Installation Key that you can enter to enable the new Option. Refer to the Option documentation for detailed instructions. Main Oscilloscope Application ----------------------------- The main oscilloscope application is critical to the operation of the instrument as an oscilloscope or as a PC. The application is expected to be running at all times. Even when minimized on the Windows taskbar, oscilloscope error messages, notifiers, etc are always posted to the desktop. The only time you should exit the main oscilloscope application is to install other software packages. Installing Hardware and Software -------------------------------- If you install third party hardware or software not manufactured by Tektronix onto your TDS5000, you may be prompted to insert a Windows 2000 CD (for example, when adding a printer). When this occurs, select "Have Disk" and specify the directory C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. Many of the required Windows files (specifically, the compressed archive files, or .cab files) have been pre-loaded into this directory. PC Hardware and Software Compatibility -------------------------------------- The TDS5000 oscilloscope is a very complex and highly integrated hardware and software system. The oscilloscope is dependent on the specific version of the PC motherboard and Windows operating system installed at the factory. Any changes to any of the PC hardware or the Windows operating system will effect the performance of the instrument. Do not attempt to modify or update any of the PC hardware, Windows 2000 operating systems components, or BIOS settings. Power Configuration & Settings ------------------------------ Tektronix recommends that you not modify the power-related settings in either the BIOS or the Power Management area of Windows 2000. They are set at the factory to a configuration that is optimal for the instrument. Changing these settings can prevent the oscilloscope from operating properly. Touch Screen Calibration ------------------------ Your optional touch screen is calibrated at the factory. If the need ever arises to re-calibrate the touch screen, minimize the oscilloscope application and select Start -> Programs -> Touch Screen Calibration and follow the instructions. Resetting the BIOS to factory settings -------------------------------------- OS restore CD 1.2.0 and greater have a menu selection to restore the BIOS to factory settings. OS restore CD prior to 1.2.0 need to use the following procedure. To restore all BIOS CMOS settings to Factory preset conditions, run cmos.exe in C:\Tektronix\Cmos. There are two possible factory settings: networking disabled and networking enabled. To use, open a DOS window and type: cd C:\Tektronix\Cmos followed by either cmos -r nonet to have networking disabled (the default or standard state), or cmos -r net to have networking enabled. There is also a readme.txt file in that directory repeating these instructions. Virus Detection --------------- Virus Detection software packages, when run continuously, can consume significant Windows resources. This may impede the performance of the oscilloscope. It is recommended that if Virus Detection software is used, that it be run once at power up and then exited. This will ensure that the oscilloscope has the resources needed to perform as expected. Remote PC Control Software Support ---------------------------------- The TDS5000 Series uses Tektronix proprietary technology to ensure optimal waveform update rate. To accomplish this, the waveform data and user interface data is combined into one video stream. This technology prevents the use of certain third party applications such as PcAnywhere, LapLink, or VNC from working on the oscilloscope. The keyboard Print Screen key is also affected by this technology. Rather than using the Print Screen key to capture screen images, use the copy (Ctrl-C) and export (Ctrl-E) functions of the TDS5000. Box 500 Beaverton, OR 97077 Known Issues ------------ The following list contains information on oscilloscope functions associated with this software release. The current version has the following known issues and workarounds: - Due to a driver issue with Windows 2000, the integrated thermal printer is slow to respond. Please allow 10-15 seconds for a print operation to begin. If the oscilloscope is running virus scan software, print operations could take significantly longer (up to ~90 seconds). - The Optional Application software "Hide" or "Close" Button/Icon can intermittently remain in foreground when TekScope application goes to full window and displays the "App" button. If this occurs, click anywhere in TekScope Application (upper half of screen) to bring the rest of the TekScope application forward.
