ScanIt! is a Tcl/Tk script that has been written to provide a simple graphical user interface (GUI) to scan documents on the Hall C counting house scanner and include them into hclog en- tries.. It offers a variety of standard scan options to choose from, the possibility to make hclog entries and to proceed to more sophisticated scanning. The scanning is handled by sjscan, which is a command line interpreter add-on to XVscan. The virtue of ScanIt! is that with just a few mouse clicks a do- cument can be scanned in a ready-to-be-implemented quality. 2. Running ScanIt! The scanner is currently connected to cdaqh1, and therefore one must login to cdaqh1 in order to scan documents. On the cdaq and cvxwrks accounts, the alias "scanit" has been added to point to /net/fs1/home/cdaq/hclog/src/scandir/ScanIt . To start, place the document in the scanner. Position it in por- trait format in the upper right corner (see the green sign). Log- in to cdaqh1 (as cdaq or cvxwrks) and type 'scanit'. Select the the right image type and size and hit the 'Scan It!' button. The scanner will warm up for 10 seconds and proceed with the scan- ning. The scanned image is stored in a temporary file which af- ter completion of the script is deleted. The temporary file is opened in an xv window. With a click on the right mouse button inside the xv window the xv controls window is invoked, in which the scanned image can be rotated, changed in size, cropped, or processed further, if necessary. 3. The buttons The ScanIt! window has three parts. - The top part lets you choose a document type and size - the "Scan It!" button starts the scanning process - the bottom button line - Document type: - B&W light: for documents with black text or line graphics on white paper - B&W dark: for documents with black text or line graphics on darker paper - B&W Photo: for photographies, if colour doesn't matter - Color Photo: for full fledged 4"x5" photos - higher resolu- tion, brighter than normal - Color Documents: for colored documents other than photos - Document size: - 4" x 5": Photo (may not fit always - crop in the xv window!) - 8.5" x 5.5": 1/2 letter format, common on note blocks - 8.5" x 11": letter format - Din A4: common european format - 8.5" x 14": legal format - HCLogEntry: call the hclogentry editor - XVscan: call XVscan in case the scanning result was insuffi- cient - XV: call XV - Help: display this help file - Quit: quit without saving 4. Inserting scanned images into hclog With the scanned image in an xv window and the hclogentry window open, grab or crop out of the xv window! (For information see the hclogentry help) 5. Beyond ScanIt! If you are not satisfied with the result of the scan, press XVscan. This will open up an XV window in which the windows but- ton offers a Scanner option. In the following XVscan window, you will be able to adjust all necessary parameters, like size, po- sition, brightness, contrast, resolution, number of colors.
