After many fruitless attempts we decided to replace the encoders on the outer bogies. While putting a new encoder on the set screws for the shaft were striped. We could not remove the encoder, or tighten the set screws. We decided to get a spare motor and swap the entire motor out. Well, it turns out the motor, from the spares' transcontainer, I had thought was a spare was, in fact, a bad motor. Well, off to find another one. Turns out there is a cage in the Physics Storage building labeled "Bogie Motor Spares", or some such. Three motors in there. So, I take a motor with the red plastic caps still on the connectors; thinking it would be a newer motor. Well, things still did not function correctly with this "new" motor. What to do? Mark had us take the bolts out that hold the friction plate thingy together. This allows the wheel to turn freely of the motor. The spectrometer then moved correctly with three of the outside bogies connected. To our utter frustration the "new" motor was running backwards, though now disconnected from the bogie. Fortunately, none of the motors have labels indicating what kind of a state they are in.
