Bran
From Hall A Wiki
- In 2008/2009, the UVa 3He Target Lab filled and tested their very first Convection Cell named Bran. The idea is to heat a portion of one of two transfer tubes in order to create a density imbalance and induce a convection current of gas thru the cell. In this case, the Pumping Chamber (PC) sphere at the top would normally be heated up in an optical pumping oven (235C for 5:1 K/Rb Hybrid), the right transfer tube (vertical part only) to about 50C and the rest left at room temperature of 20-25C. After pumping the cell for awhile and getting a convection current going (in this case it will be counter-clockwise), one uses the Zapper coil on the left to depolarize a slug of polarized 3He gas, and follow the slug via the four pickup coils to determine the convection speed.
