Straight-through Beamline Commissioning (Y. Roblin) 29 Feb - Mar 1st
Initial Beam Accelerator Ops, with assistance from the Hall A shift crew. This includes delivery of beam to the Hall A (not local) dump, commissioning of the BPMs, calibration with the Harp and power up of the rasters.
Full Details for ONLY straight-through beam delivery are provided at:
Start-up configuration
- Two pass beam, E0 =2.2 GeV, polarized, no raster.
- Current: Initially pulsed up to 2-4<math>\mu</math>A pulsed, then up to 5 <math>\mu</math>A CW.
- Spectrometers at 12.5 degrees, <math>P_0=2250.8</math> MeV/c (carbon elastic).
- Sieve slits : OUT.
- Septa settings: 5.69 degrees.
- Compton chicane: OFF.
- Polarized Target chicane : OFF and degaussed.
- Tungsten Calorimeter : Retracted.
- Polarized Target: Field OFF
Beam Diagnostics Check-out (Pengjia, Alexandre, Kalyan)
- Check BPM, slow and fast raster signals in the data
- Is spot++ working for both arms?
- Do HARP scan
- BPM calibration by Pengjia here
- It includes calibrating beam positions with both straight-thru and target field ON
- Check BCM signals in the scalers (HRS, third arm)
Tungsten Calorimeter Check-out (Alexandre, Pengjia)
(Can be done either in straight-through or when going through Chicane)
- Commission tungsten calorimeter
- BCM calibration ?
- How do we establish that we can achieve ~1% measurement ?
HRS/Detector Checkout
(Resp: g2p students)
- Most of these check-out can be done during the initial beamline commissioning( both straight-through or when going through Chicane).
- The order in which these checks are done do not matter (some of them are independent).
- After we finish these checks we should be ready to do optics runs with target field.
HRS Detectors Check-out (Melissa, Ryan, Vince)
- Check all the detectors in both arm to establish that we don't have problems.
- Post ALL the online plots for the detectors (ADC, TDC etc..) in the Halog
- VDC (efficiencies etc..)
- Gas Cerenkov (ADC and timing peaks)
- S1 and S2m (ADC and timing peaks)
- Lead-glass Calorimeter (ADC)
- Check HV on all the detectors, align the peaks if necessary
DAQ/Trigger Check-out (Melissa, Ryan, Vince)
- Establish the DAQ conditions for production
- What is the max rate DAQ can run with < 20% DT (Buffered and unbuffered mode) ?
- Record deadtime as a function of DAQ rate. Change rate via current or prescalers.
- Check synchronization of ROCs in buffered mode
- Make sure all important scaler channels are working (BCM, Helicity, triggers, L1A, clock)
- Check scalers in S1 and S2m detectors for double pulsing
Third Arm Detector Check-out (Chao, Kalyan)
- Set thresholds for 2.2 GeV beam
- Check for bad channels, double peaks etc ..
- Check deadtime, helicity, BCM scalers
Lumi Detector Check-out (Pengjia, Kalyan)
- Adjust HV with 100nA current to make sure all channels are roughly aligned and there is no saturation in Happex ADC
- Establish non linearity of the Lumi detectors
- Measure lumi asymmetries
Straight-through Optics (Mar 2nd- Mar 4th)
(Resp : Jixie, Min et al.)
HRS and Septum Magnet Checks
- Cycle magnets?
- Use carbon target and set HRS to elastic setting.
- Septum field vs current, checks with carbon elastic peaks
- Set the dipole first and then tune quads?
On-line Analysis
(Resp: Toby)
- Make sure all on-line analysis scripts are up to date on both arms
- Post easy instructions for the shift crew on how to start online analysis (stick notes near the DAQ machine)
- Make sure all the important information is recorded correctly in the datastream:
- EPICS: Beam diagnostics(BCM, BPM, HARP etc..)
- Target variables
- Helicity sorted scalers information ( triggers, L1A, BCM, helicity etc.)
- Helicity in ADC, scaler, TIR
- Start-of-Run and End-of-Run information is up to date with all relevant info
Compton Test (2 shifts, Mar 3-4)
(Resp: Sirish et al.)
- Establish beam through Compton chicane
- 2nd shift is contingent on clean tune established by end of first shift.
- ??
Moller Commissioning (1 shift, Mar. 3- 4)
(Resp: O. Glamazdin, J. Zhang)
- Detector HV tuning (30min)
- Q1 and Q2 quadruple magnets scan (1hour)
- Moller target longitudinal scan (30 min)
- Beam polarization measurement (30-40min)
- MCC job (to set Moller settings and to restore previous beam parameters) (~2hours)
Total: 5 hours.
Helicity Checks
(Resp: Chao, Pengjia, Kalyan)
- Better to do this during Moller runs
- Larger charge asymmetry runs to check BCM/helicity signals in HAPPEX, HRS, thirdarm, Moller DAQs simultaneously
- Establish that there are no problems by checking Hall-A beam charge asymmetries measured in Hall-C
Commissioning Beamline Chicane I (March 5th)
- FZ2 magnet to Yves config #5 (As early in day shift as possible).
- Alignment and survey.
- Ramp up Target Magnet from 0T to 2.5T.
- Target in beam : Carbon.
- Restablish beam. Mostly Y. Roblin will be driving this part (I will put an ATLis link when it is available):
- Start with E0 = 2.2 GeV , B = 2.5 T and theta_target = 90 deg
- Check beam diagnostics again, when going through chicane
- We can do some of our optics while Yves is doing this checks (Jixie et al.)
- BPM+slow raster calibration can also be done during this time (Pengjia)
- Initial GEp production
Commissioning Beamline Chicane II (March 6th)
- FZ2 magnet to Yves config #8. (As early in day shift as possible).
- Alignment and survey.
- Target magnet rotation from 90 to 6 degrees.
- Ramp up Target Magnet from 2.5T to 5.0T.
- Target reconfiguration: 70GHz to 140 GHz.
- Target in beam : Carbon.
- Reestablish beam. Mostly Y. Roblin will be driving this part (I will put an ATLis link when it is available):
- Check beam diagnostics again, when going through chicane
- We can do some of our optics while Yves is doing this checks (Jixie et al.)
- BPM+slow raster calibration can also be done during this time (Pengjia)
- E0= 2.2 GeV, B = 5 T and theta_target = 6 deg
- Continue doing optics (Jixie et al.)
- Move to GEp production
Optics with chicane (March 5th onwards)
(Resp: Jixie, Min, Vince et al.)
- With beam going through chicane:
- Full details are provided at : Optics run plan
Dilution/Packing fraction Runs
(Resp : Kalyan, Jixie)
- E0= 2.2 GeV, B = 5 T and theta_target = 6 deg
- Run with thick Carbon target, raster on, 100nA (approximation for N2 contribution)
- Run with Empty Cell which should include Al end caps + NMR coil + He4
- Run with No target to get contribution from He4 only ?
- Repeat these measurement in every g2p/gep configuration
Target Thickness Runs
- For every g2p production setting take NH3 elastic runs
- This should be done for every target stick
Beam Energy Measurement
(Resp: Doug?)
- Mott ?
