E08-027/E08-007 Commissioning Runplan (K. Slifer / K. Allada)

Beamline Commissioning (Y. Roblin)

Initial Beam Accelerator Ops, with assistance from the Hall A shift crew. This includes delivery of beam to the dump, commissioning of the BPMs, calibration with the Harp and power up of the rasters.

Full Details for ONLY straight-through beam delivery are provided at:

Start-up configuration

  1. Two pass beam, E0 =2.2 GeV, polarized, no raster.
  2. Current: Initially pulsed up to 2-4<math>\mu</math>A pulsed, then up to 5 <math>\mu</math>A CW.
  3. Spectrometers at 12.5 degrees, <math>P_0=??</math> MeV (carbon elastic).
  4. Sieve slits : OUT.
  5. Septa settings: 5.69 degrees.
  6. Compton chicane: OFF.
  7. Polarized Target chicane : OFF and degaussed.
  8. Tungsten Calorimeter : Retracted.
  9. Polarized Target: Field OFF

Beam Diagnostics Check-out (Pengjia, Alexandre, Kalyan)

  1. Check BPM, slow and fast raster signals in the data
  2. Is spot++ working for both arms?
  3. BPM commissioning plan by Pengjia here
  4. Check BCM signals in the scalers

Tungsten Calorimeter Check-out (Alexandre, Pengjia)

  1. Commission tungsten calorimeter
  2. BCM calibration ?
  3. How do we establish that we can achieve ~1% measurement ?

HRS/Detector Checkout

(Resp: g2p students)

  • Most of these check-out can be done during the initial beamline commissioning(see above).
  • The order in which these checks are done do not matter a lot (some of them are independent).
  • After we finish these checks we should be ready to do optics runs with target field.

HRS Detectors Check-out (Melissa, Ryan, Vince)

  1. Check all the detectors in both arm to establish that we don't have problems.
  2. Post ALL the online plots for the detectors (ADC, TDC etc..) in the Halog
    1. VDC (efficiencies etc..)
    2. Gas Cerenkov (ADC and timing peaks)
    3. S1 and S2m (ADC and timing peaks)
    4. Lead-glass Calorimeter (ADC)
  3. Check HV on all the detectors, align the peaks if necessary

DAQ/Trigger Check-out (Melissa, Ryan, Vince)

  1. Establish the DAQ conditions for production
    1. What is the max rate DAQ can run with < 20% DT (Buffered and unbuffered mode) ?
    2. Record deadtime as a function of DAQ rate. Change rate via current or prescalers.
    3. Check synchronization of ROCs in buffered mode
    4. Make sure all important scaler channels are working (BCM, Helicity, triggers, L1A, clock)
    5. Check scalers in S1 and S2m detectors for double pulsing

Third Arm Detector Check-out (Chao, Kalyan)

  1. Set thresholds for 2.2 GeV beam
  2. Check for bad channels, double peaks etc ..
  3. Check deadtime, helicity, BCM scalers

Helicity Checks (Chao, Pengjia, Kalyan)

  1. Larger charge asymmetry runs to check BCM/helicity signals in HAPPEX, HRS, thirdarm, Moller DAQs simultaneously
  2. Establish that there are no problems by checking Hall-A beam charge asymmetries measured in Hall-C

Lumi Detector Check-out (Pengjia, Kalyan)

  1. Adjust HV with 100nA current to make sure all channels are roughly aligned and there is no saturation in Happex ADC
  2. Establish non linearity of the Lumi detectors
  3. Measure lumi asymmetries

Optics Commissioning

(Resp: Jixie, Min, Vince et al.)

HRS and Septum Magnet Checks

  1. Cycle magnets?
  2. Septum field vs current, checks with carbon elastic peaks
    1. Set HRS central momentum to carbon elastic setting
    2. Set the dipole first and then tune quads?

Full details are provided at:

On-line Analysis

(Resp: Toby)

  1. Make sure all on-line analysis scripts are up to date on both arms
  2. Post easy instructions for the shift crew on how to start online analysis (stick notes near the DAQ machine)
  3. Make sure all the important information is recorded correctly in the datastream:
    1. EPICS: Beam diagnostics(BCM, BPM, HARP etc..)
    2. Target variables
    3. Helicity sorted scalers information ( triggers, L1A, BCM, helicity etc.)
    4. Helicity in ADC, scaler, TIR
  4. Start-of-Run and End-of-Run information is up to date with all relevant info

Compton Test (2 shifts)

(Resp: Sirish et al.)

  1. Establish beam through Compton chicane
  2.  ??

Moller Commissioning (1 shift)

(Resp: O. Glamazdin, J. Zhang)

  1. Detector HV tuning (30min)
  2. Q1 and Q2 quadruple magnets scan (1hour)
  3. Moller target longitudinal scan (30 min)
  4. Beam polarization measurement (30-40min)
  5. MCC job (to set Moller settings and to restore previous beam parameters) (~2hours)
