3 position system
The experiment needs the slug to be either
in or out the beamline, the first in order to heat the slug, the 2nd to
enable the taking of datas (most are the temperature of te slug before
and after an exposure).
However, we need the temperature of the slug back to a "normal temperature"(around 20°C) before making another run.
The problem is that since the full device is in vacuum, it might take several days to cool down the slug (that's why there's a cooling system ;).
So we need a third position for the slug, out of the beam, on the
cooling plate, to enable the cool down time to be as small as possible
(it will take about 30mn to cool down the slug)
All the components of the 3 position system are colored, the white part is the feedthru (6).
You can see from this picture how this system is supposed to make
the slug move up and down : the pipe at the bottom of the part 6
is connected to the slug.
The part 1 is fixed at the top of the vacuum chamber.
The air cylinder 5 can push the shaft and the turnbuckle 4, thus making
the feedthru (white, 6) and therefore the slug move down, along
the precision shafting 2.
The bellows enable the system to move up.
