Steve: A few points for future discussion:
1. As luminosity increases, the accidentals to real ratio increases. This may limit luminosity before detector capability is reached.
2. Moving from 4.5T to 1.5T makes resolution worse. We should demonstrate that the worse resolution is sufficient.
3. I think we should make fake data, based on several physics models. Then fuzz those data by detector resolution and add in accidentals. Then show that by analyzing these fake data, we have some sensitivity to the physics. I know that this is hard, but if I was on a committee I would ask for this.
Dipangkar Summary of the meeting:
The two major items to be addressed to schedule the technical review are, the mTPC prototyping and testing and the high occupancy/high multiplicity tracking. A lot of effort has been put into both and on simulating the experiment in support of these two issues. We saw both items have made good progress and are on the cusp of producing the results we need to return to the review.
All agreed that discussing going back to PAC 53 is a moot point.
The square prototype is on a timeline to be comprehensively tested by this summer. The analysis tools are ready, so the analysis can be completed online. There was also the possibility of beam testing in Hall D and Eric/Huong will add TDIS to the spreadsheet of beam tests being organized by Tanja.
Both ACTS and GNN based tracking are expected to begin testing with mock data at the expected rate of 55 tracks/event per module.
The tasks left from the simulation are to test the ability to identify the good protons from the background. This will also address the impact of the poorer momentum resolution (due to 1.5T field instead of 4.7T) on extracting the physics of interest.
A new deadline of Dec 2025, for going back to the review was floated. There seems to be agreement that this is a reasonable timeline given the expected convergence of effort and results over the summer.
The other two less critical items are the target design and magnet design.
These can be addressed by communicating with the target group once we schedule the review. We will have more concrete examples of similar targets, such as the ALERT target, as it gets ready to run. It was also felt that some of these are ERR questions rather than the concerns put forward by the PAC for the technical review. We need to negotiate with Patrizia about taking some of these off the table.
Initial conversations have not been fruitful, but once we are ready to schedule the review, this can be revisited.
There was also discussion on the need for going back to the PAC (now it would be PAC 54).
This was based on the major changes made to the detector concept, the possible new magnet, and the much higher physics interest and arguing for a higher physics impact and rating. Another issue was to seek more beam time, which may allow us to reduce the luminosity. The luminosity of course would be high enough to justify this experiment.
The timeline for the review in Dec 2025 would also provide ample time to decide about going back to PAC 54.
The conclusion is to move full steam ahead on both the mTPC and tracking with the goal of review in Dec 2025.
